Netgear has recently announced its Orbi Wi-Fi 6 Mesh System. The mesh system with support for 802.1ax Wi-Fi will be available in a matter of a few days at $699.99, which includes a router and a satellite. You will be wondering why is the price of a router more than smartphones, TVs and game consoles. Well, that is because the router consists of multiple units, which are installed throughout the house to provide better internet connectivity.
The new Orbi generation appears in the AX6000 series and the bundle of router and satellite comes under the product designation RBK852. The components are somewhat wider and heavier than the RBK50 bundle of the previous AC3000 generation. The range has remained the same at 350 square meters.
On the other hand, there is an upgrade from Wi-Fi to Wi-Fi, or from Wi-Fi 5 to Wi-Fi 6, and an increase from six to eight antennas. The Orbi offers a maximum bandwidth of 1200 Mbps at 2.4 GHz and 2400 Mbps at 5 GHz, with a backhaul of 4×4 channels at 5 GHz of 1200 Mbps for the connection between router and satellite. Wi-Fi 6 offers more mu-mimo than Wi-Fi 5 for a higher upload bandwidth and there is the inclusion of 4G technology, which should lead to greater efficiency for more than one user. The latter would make the mesh system better equipped for, for example, simultaneous streaming by different users in a household.
Both the router and the satellite also have four gigabit Ethernet ports. In addition, a WAN port of 2.5 Gbps is present and there is also support for WAN link aggregation to bundle one of the Gigabit Ethernet ports for WAN purposes.
The Orbi AX6000 has 512MB of flash memory and 1GB of ram. The chipset is Qualcomm Networking Pro 1200 and part of this is a Qualcomm quadcore that works at 2.2 GHz.
Netgear Orbi launching Wi-Fi 6 Mesh system will give rise to a whole new competition between the top router manufacturing companies because now, they will have to come up with something as good as Netgear Orbi Wi-Fi Mesh 6 system if not better. Many companies have taken note of this and have already started designing something new and advanced to counter Netgear’s move that it has made by launching such an advanced system in Orbi Wi-Fi 6 Mesh system.
